Simple Definition of influence: the power to change or affect someone or something: the power to cause changes without directly forcing them to happen: a person or thing that affects someone or something in an important way.
How Power Works
You must have a sufficient power base to lead people effectively. There are eleven sources of power made up of the following personal sources: knowledge, expressiveness, history, attraction and character. There are also organizational sources: network, information resources, role and reputation with an additional meta-source which is will.
Consider the power generated by batteries and the voltage. The more the voltage is, the more impact it can deliver. In other words, a 5 volt battery would not be as powerful as a 500 volt battery. Likewise, people with greater sources of power are better able to lead and influence others than people with fewer and lesser sources of power. The more powerful you are, the more influence you will have.
How Influence Works
To accomplish a specific purpose, you need influence as the application of power. People typically use ten positive influence techniques to try to lead and influence others. These techniques are alliance building, appealing to values, modelling, consulting, appealing to relationship, socializing, stating, exchanging, legitimising, persuading and logical. Unfortunately, people also tend to use four negative influence tactics which include threatening, intimidating, manipulating and avoiding.
The Power of Influence with a Handshake
A simple handshake and a smile in an offer of friendship can affect how people react to us because this is a form of influencing others. Every time we try to affect how other people think, behave, or decide, we are trying to influence them. A smile and a handshake are attempts to socialize and to form a connection and break down barriers. As people get to know us and like us, they are more likely to say yes to our requests.
Perhaps one of the less emphasized matters of concern in the life of a Christian is the power of influence of other people. In many ways, we would like to think of ourselves as above the fray– able to be around all kinds of negative influences while remaining pure. Power of influence is more of a problem for teenagers and possibly to a lesser extent for adults.
THE POWER OF INFLUENCE
Yet God knows better. God recognizes the power of influence, and how it can work either for evil or for good.
